Dental Onlay Austin TX

Dental onlays are an ideal way for Austin TX patients to repair and strengthen damaged teeth without the use of more invasive techniques, like dental crowns. At Glint, I provide a number of minimally invasive options to help restore your smile. A more conservative treatment option than dental crowns, onlays are commonly used to repair teeth that have minor cracks or decay.

What Are Dental Onlays?

Dental onlays may be a more conservative method of tooth restoration, but they’re no less effective than a dental crown. Olays are a strong, long-lasting restorative procedure that can be used in place of a crown. Instead of a prosthetic that covers all or most of your natural tooth, onlays fit inside the grooves of your tooth, covering the entire chewing surface.

Onlays are often a better option for many patients because they don’t involve the removal of any healthy tooth structure. Although there are times when a crown may be a better option, it can increase the risk of fractures and the need for root canal treatment. Whether you’re a good candidate for an onlay depends on how much of your natural tooth has been lost to wear or decay. If very little of your tooth structure has been lost, a dental inlay (which is very similar to an onlay) may be a better option.

Once placed, an onlay can completely restore the structural integrity of your tooth, as well as its appearance and function. Onlays for teeth can be made from a variety of materials, including ceramic, to mimic the color of your natural teeth; they also have the benefit of being less likely to discolor over time compared to fillings and dental crowns.
